PinCHD General Revenue Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities
Project (GR CTG):
The Pinellas County Healthy Department has always recognized
the importance of chronic disease prevention. Along with five
(5) community partners, we have made a new commitment to make
a difference in the health outcomes for the minority population
in Pinellas County.
Historically, African Americans/Blacks, Asians and Pacific
Islanders and Hispanics do not fare as well as their White
counterparts with disease prevention and survival. In fact,
studies have shown that some minorities are at higher risk
for certain illnesses such as Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease,
Influenza, and Pneumonia.
The GR CTG is a community health initiative committed to
making available health resources and screenings more accessible in
order to reduce racial and health disparities in the communities of
Pinellas County. GR CTG is based on a model of community
health promotion used successfully in Latin America.

The GR CTG Program addresses
the cardiovascular disease, cancer, and immunization health
disparities between African Americans/Blacks, Hispanics,
Asians and Pacific Islanders population. The major goal
of the program is to stimulate the development of
community and neighborhood based projects that will improve
the health outcomes of racial and ethnic populations in
Florida and foster the development of coordinated,
collaborative and broad-based participation between
public and private entities. Clients to be served are adults
age 45 and over, African Americans/Blacks, Asian/Pacific
Islanders and Hispanics of any gender who reside in Pinellas
County, Florida.
The overall goal of the project is to empower this minority
population into adopting healthier lifestyles to prevent
cardiovascular and cancer disease, participate in health
screenings to identify cardiovascular and cancer diseases
in early stages and receive early treatment, to seek
immunizations, to participate in physical activity wellness
groups (walking, dancing, etc.) and to attend cooking/nutrition
education activities.
