Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) as established in
1984 by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It was initially
designed to collect state-level data that allowed those in the state to
estimate prevalence for regions within their respective states concerning
major behavioral risks among adults associated with premature morbidity
and mortality. The idea was to collect data on actual behaviors that
could be useful for planning, initiating, supporting and evaluating health
promotion and disease prevention.
Currently, it's the largest continuously conducted telephone health
survey in the world. It enabled CDC, state health departments, other
health and education agencies to monitor risk behaviors related to
chronic diseases, injuries, and death. Also, is one of the most
effective tools used today in preventing disease and promoting health.
