MRC Volunteers supplement existing local emergency and public health resources in times of community need,
and include volunteers such as physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and epidemiologists,
amongst other medical and public health professionals. Other community members such as chaplains,
and general office workers play additional vital support roles.
Volunteers might be called on to assist in the distribution of medications or vaccines at Points of Dispensing also known as a POD or supplement Special Needs Shelter staffing or provide hospital surge capacity during a catastrophic disaster. Additionally volunteers might support community preparedness education, sort/distribute supplies, data entry, assist people with forms, interpretation/translation and participate in local public health initiatives. Volunteers will not be asked to do things that they are not trained for or comfortable performing.
A very basic level of training is required. Each volunteer determines their involvement based on availability and interest. A few hours to a few days. Most of the training is on line and you can choose what activities you want to participate in.
When deployed by a County Health Department, volunteers are protected from liability under Florida Sovereign Immunity Statutes and workers' compensation insurance is provided.
