enhancing and expanding cancer control activities, including education, early detection and treatment.
In a continuing effort to increase awareness of breast and cervical cancer and the importance of
early detection, our Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program offers public information and
public education programs to the public and health professionals. Please call (727) 824-6971 to
schedule an education program or staff in-service.
Our Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the Florida Department of Health’s Comprehensive
Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program.
Early detection is the key to successful diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer and cervical
cancer. Because of the importance of routine screening:
- Women – three years after becoming sexually active, but no later than age 21 – need a Pap test every two to three years.
- Women 20 years and over should do a monthly breast self-exam.
- Women 20 years and over should have their breasts checked once a year by a health care professional.
- Women over age 40 should have a mammogram once a year.
